At 20 past 9 on Sunday night, just as we were realizing how lousy the streaming version of the MTV VMAs was, an email from a publicist at Universal Music hit our inbox. The subject box simply read, "Eminem." The body of the email simply read www.eminem.com. It almost seemed old-fashioned.
Sure enough, Marshall Mathers greeted us with two high-flying birds outstretched (we're hoping by his timing he meant to be flipping off the VMAs, which were going on at the exact same time as his announcement) rather than us.
But Slim Shady announced in no uncertain language that he would have a new album out on Nov. 5. It's being referred to as "MMLP2," which sounds like a sequel to his 2000 release, "The Marshall Mathers LP." Hey, if Jay-Z can make sequels to "The Blueprint" years apart, why can't Em? Thirteen years later? Sure! Guess who's back!
His new single, "Berzerk," drops on Tuesday. He released a 14-second snippet and truthfully, it sounds more like a sequel to the Beastie Boys' "Licensed to Ill" than "The Marshall Mathers" LP. Hey, we'll take it. Welcome back!
