Dress shopping, buying your first bra, obsessing over a pair of shoes — these are the experiences “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” recalls.
“These things seem sort of trivial in the grand scheme, but it’s those moments that make up our lives,” says Lauren Elias, a performer in the play. “I can’t think of a woman who hasn’t gone through the horrors of dress shopping or the awkwardness of buying your first bra.”
The play, written by famous authors Nora and Delia Ephron and based on the book by Ileen Beckerman, features a series of monologues and vignettes about women and their relationships with clothing.
“My favorite character is a woman who has a three-page-long tirade about how she loathes carrying a purse,” says Elias. “I completely identify.”
The play is part of the premiere season of a Boston theater scene newcomer: Hub Theatre Company. Elias is a co-founder.
“We wanted to start a company that was pay-what-you-can for all shows,” she says. “There are plenty of reasons why people don’t go to the theater — there’s a new ‘CSI’ on tonight, it’s raining, what have you — but we didn’t want ticket prices to be one of them.”
Sticking with the theme, gently used clothing will be collected at all performances of the show. “We’ll find some new homes for those bridesmaid dresses you’re never going to shorten and wear again,” says Elias.
