If only we could all age as gracefully as “The Lion King.” After 17 years on Broadway, the groundbreaking theatrical spectacle became the highest-grossing show of all time this past September. On Jan. 4, The Broadway League released its complete data set from 2014 – the highest-grossing, most-attended year to date in theater history. And it’s no surprise that the highest-grossing show overall for the second year in a row is Disney’s “The Lion King.” The stage adaptation of the animated family film took home the title despite the fact that six shows had a higher average ticket price, and at least 15 other shows had higher top-priced tickets.
Metro went behind the scenes with South African-born Nteliseng Nkhela, who plays the enigmatic Rafiki, to try and figure out some of the secrets to this show’s indefatigable success. Here’s what we saw, in an exclusive sneak peek.
