An Irish actor died just days after filming the first of his scenes for the fifth season of HBO's "Game of Thrones."
According to The Belfast Telegraph, J.J. Murphy, 86, collapsed and died Friday. He had been cast as Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night's Watch. Though a stage actor for much of his career, Murphy told friends he was excited to be involved with the TV show, the Telegraph wrote.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss released a brief statement through HBO: “We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy. He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended.”
Filming for the show's next season is underway in Northern Ireland.
