Get spooked!

As Halloween approaches like a pack of marauding zombies, it’s time to take a look at the gasps and ghouls awaiting thrill-seekers in Long Island’s scarier areas.

Scream Park at Bayville Adventure Park offers five separate attractions, including Uncle Needle’s 3-D Fun House of Fear. Tiki Action Park in Centereach has also undergone a ghastly transformation, turning the usually pleasant mini-golf park into the “Trail of Terror.”

While these “haunted houses” are sure to bring you and your date closer, for those in search of authentic things that go bump in the night, Long Island is teeming with tales of macabre specters like the men in black, said to wander the night in immaculate funeral wear that’s never in need of dry cleaning, and The Mothman, a 10-foot monstrosity with wings. Many of these phantasms prefer to frequent spots with menacing monikers like Mount Misery in West Hills County Park and “The Hanging Tree” in Patchogue, where legend has it that a ghostly noose can sometimes be seen dangling.

The more refined spooks, however, prefer classier digs like Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay. That Halloween celebration includes ghost stories, tarot card readings and a debriefing from the Suffolk Investigative Ghost Hunting Team, who recently investigated the museum to see if there are any wandering specters. They’ll share their results through Sunday.
