Bring to Light: Nuit Blanche New York 2011

Saturday,

6 p.m. to 12 a.m., various locations in Greenpoint, Brooklyn; free with RSVP

Happening in more than two dozen cities around the world, the festival incorporates galleries, street art and on-the-spot happenings to take art into the night. In its second year in Greenpoint, the New York event, dubbed Bring to Light, features scores of artists making a scene inside and out.

Theater

‘Suddenly Last Summer’

Now through Oct. 2,

Hudson Guild Theater, 441 W. 26th St., $18

The play is a thoroughly engaging equation of sex with consumption that unfolds as a murder mystery. Playing on elements of his personal family history, Tennessee Williams poetically demonstrates how being fully honest about human sexuality can lead an individual to be eliminated by a threatened society unwilling to accept the truth.

‘Closer’

Now through Oct. 9, ATA’s Sargent Theatre, 314 W. 54th St.,

fourth floor

“Closer” explores the upper limits of emotional violence between four people wrapped up in matters of the heart. Elyse Fisher is particularly compelling as Alice, an elusive stripper who can be truly kind and loving — but can also turn ice cold when her suitors pry into the truth of her hidden history.

Festival of the Spoken Nerd

Monday, 7 p.m.,

Soho Playhouse,

15 Vandam St., $15-$25

London songstress Helen Arney joins fellow Brits Steve Mould and stand-up mathematician Matt Parker, NYC’s Baba Brinkman (of the incredible “Rap Guide to Evolution”) and musician Sxip Shirey to explore the intersection of art, science and comedy.

Shirts & Destroy presents ‘The Exquisite Corpse’

Now through Oct. 9, Weds. through Sat.,

8 p.m., Kraine Theater,

85 E. Fourth St., $18

Featuring original artworks alongside a selection of wares, “The Exquisite Corpse” spotlights art inspired by tattoos and doom metal — themes that drive art and design collective S&D. Working with such bands as Cave In, SunnO))) and Isis, the artists are clearly focused on wearing what they love on their sleeves — whether shirts or skins.

Pick up peppers from local farmers, check out expert fire-breathing and take in the sounds of eight bands including the Lost Bayou Ramblers with Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano.

Atlantic Antic Street Festival

Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., Atlantic Ave. Hicks to Fourth Ave., free

Brooklyn denizens indulge in down-home delectables, from Middle Eastern treats to cute cupcakes, while scooping up bargains from shops and local artisans. Along the way, every brand of band plays on, belting out tunes from blues to belly-dancing. Maura Hogan

Music

‘Arias with a Twist’

Now through Oct. 16, Abrons Art Center,

466 Grand St., $35-$65

At the show’s center is performance artist Joey Arias singing songs of salacious celluloid dreams and macabre nightmares in this revamped and expanded version of the original production, which played to sold-out houses in 2008.

Film

New York Film Festival

Friday to Oct. 16,

Lincoln Center,

70 Lincoln Center Plaza, $8-$50

This year’s 17-day program reads like a who’s who of filmmaking, including such notable directors as Roman Polanski, David Cronenberg, Abel Ferrara, Pedro Almodovar, Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, Aki Kaurismaki, Alexander Payne and Lars von Trier.
