Storybook Burlesque presents ‘Through the Looking Glass’

In previous shows, Storybook Burlesque has introduced viewers to the surprisingly bawdy world of Dr. Seuss, traipsed through Shakespeare (scantily clad, naturally) in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and turned the Brothers Grimm X-rated. The troupe’s latest titillating production tackles Lewis Carroll’s classic.
Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque: Lucinda Sans’ Birthday Party

Take one part CHERYL art-party collective and one part spangled stripped extravaganza and you’ll get something like Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque, this month celebrating the birthday of Lucida Sans with a myriad of performances designed to entice, antagonize and titillate.

Richard Serra: ‘Junction/Cycle’

“Junction” (2011) and “Cycle” (2010) are two new sculptures by Richard Serra. Serra has produced large-scale works for architectural, urban and landscape settings from Iceland to New Zealand. While he continues to take his sculptural syntax to new levels, his works are always awe-inspiring.
Matthew Barney: ‘DJED’

This is Matthew Barney’s first NYC exhibition of the “Ancient Evenings” project. A collaboration with Jonathan Bepler, it’s structured as a site-specific opera loosely based on Norman Mailer’s 1983 novel of the same name, and features three large-scale sculptures made from 25 tons of molten iron. R

Charles Darwin, meet Dr. Dre. Canadian indie hip-hop artist Baba Brinkman raps through a humorous exploration of The Origin of Species in his one-man show, an award-winner at 2009’s Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. Brinkman consulted academics to ensure historical and scientific accuracy along with flow and rhymes.

Three Artist Films w/ Albert Maysles

While you may be familiar with their documentaries “Grey Gardens” and “Gimme Shelter,” there’s less opportunity to see the stellar short films by Albert and David Maysles. At this special viewing, Albert Maysles presents three short films he and his brother co-directed: “Christo’s Valley Curtain,” “Anastasia” and “Salvadore Dali’s Fantastic Dream.”
