If you grew up with "Reading Rainbow," PBS's well-loved kids show about books, you no doubt were sad to hear the news that the show was ending after 23 years back in '06. But now, the show's former presenter, LeVar Burton, is making it his mission to bring it back. Burton recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $1 million to start a Web version of the show, which will be shown to students in at least 1,500 classrooms.
On his Kickstarter page, Burton stresses the importance of teaching reading to children early in life. He says that one in four kids in the U.S. will grow up illiterate and that children who can't read by the fourth grade are 400 percent more likely to drop out of high school.
So far, the campaign has raised $94,725; still a long way off from $1 million. Click here to learn more about the campaign.
