ICYMI: ‘Roast of James Franco’ wrap-up

In case you missed Comedy Central’s Roast of James Franco last night because, you know, you were out barbecuing, or drinking heavily, or barbecuing while drinking heavily, or doing any other end-of-summer activity that didn’t involve being holed up in your hot apartment in front of a glowing screen, here’s what you missed:

WHAT: Gay jokes
WHY: Franco is sexually ambiguous and also very pretty, so obviously he is probably gay. These were sort of cop-out jokes, but a lot of them still worked.

WHAT: Indian jokes
WHY: Aziz Ansari was there and he is Indian so… yeah. Highlights included Sarah Silverman’s ‘Indian in the Cupboard’ jokeand pretty much all of Roast newbie #t=92″ target=”_blank”>Natasha Leggero’s digs. Ansari had the last laugh, though, when he commended everyone on time traveling to 1995 to write their Indian jokes. In yo’ white faces.

WHAT: Jewish jokes
WHY: Because half the people on stage were Jewish, so there was a lot of material.

WHAT: James Franco is sleepy jokes
WHY: Well, just look at him. Dude can’t open his eyes right.

WHAT: Jonah Hill is a d— jokes
WHY: I don’t know, I guess because he’s actually a real sweetheart. Or else, you know, he’s a big d— and this was everyone’s chance to say so.

WHAT: James Franco does everything/is terrible at everything jokes
WHY: Because, James Franco. Come on, you guys, you’re better than that.

Aaaand that’s about it. There were some big laughs — although most of them coming from the other Roasters (an assortment of Franco’s best buddies aka this generation’s comedy mafia) themselves — but not a whole lot of fresh material. Still, Franco was as Franco-ingly charming as ever, and there was no question that there’s some big talent in this particular mafia.

But the best set of the night has to go to Andy Samberg, who turned the whole roast on its head by making fun of himself and, in turn, the entire concept of a roast. #SoMeta
