Infographic: Haters gonna hate

As Taylor Swift’s song goes, “the haters gonna hate (hate hate hate hate hate).” For some celebrities — like Swift — all that animosity wilts in the face of continued success, while for others — looking at you, Renee Zellweger — it’s an obstacle they can’t get past. We noticed that certain famous women constantly find themselves on the receiving end of a wave of negativity despite putting out great work, and it’s really kind of a head-scratcher. Why are some women perennial targets for haters more than others? And why do famous men get a pass from this kind of premeditated bashing?

Take Swift and Katherine Heigl, for example. They attract about the same amount of ire, but Swift keeps going platinum while Heigl has struggled since leaving “Grey’s Anatomy” five years ago. With the massive success of Swift’s “1989” last week and the premier of Heigl’s buzz-y new show, “State of Affairs,” next week, it’s a perfect time to take a look at some of the more divisive female stars of today and see how all the toxic chatter is really affecting their bottom lines.

We broke down some of the most beloved to the most taunted celebrities to see how they stack up in the success department. Maybe you think we got something wrong, though? Like maybe Jennifer Lawrence isn’t so infallible, or maybe we’re all done beating up on Anne Hathaway now. Let us know in the comments below.
