A light has gone out in the world. David Bowie, legendary singer, songwriter and rock and roll pioneer, has passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer, his reps confirm to the Hollywood Reporter. He was 69. His death comes just days after his 69th birthday and just after the release of his latest album, "Blackstar."

Stunned fans took initial reports of his passing as an Internet hoax, but the news was confirmed by a tweet from Bowie's son, film director Duncan Jones, who tweeted a photo of himself as an infant on his father's shoulders along with the message, "Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all." In addition to Jones, Bowie is survived by his wife, model Iman, and their daughter.
