Matthew McConaughey wins Best Actor Oscar for 'Dallas Buyers Club'

Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of an unlikely AIDS activist in the low-budget "Dallas Buyers Club."

Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar for Best Actor for hisportrayal of an unlikely AIDS activist in the low-budget "Dallas Buyers Club."

It was McConaughey's first Oscar nomination, though he was thepresumed frontrunner. He beat fellow nominees Christian Bale for "American Hustle,"Bruce Dern for "Nebraska,"Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Wolf of Wall Street" andChiwetel Ejiofor for "12 Years a Slave."

McConaughey's performance as Ron Woodroof in the film also recently won him the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.
