Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have separated, according to People. They haven't been spotted together in months — they've traveled separately, walked the red carpet solo and even gone on separate vacations with their kids. Now sources say it's because they've decided to take a break.
The couple have had a rocky road over the last few years: Douglas battled throat cancer, while Zeta-Jones underwent treatment for bipolar disorder. “The stress has taken a toll on their marriage,” the source said.
The couple has yet to file for divorce, and friends are hopeful that they may yet reconcile. "They want the best for their kids, no matter what happens," a friend says.
Michael Douglas, star of “Behind the Candelabra,” is a survivor of stage four throat cancer, and he has an unusual explanation for how he contracted it. He claims it comes from performing oral sex.
“Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus,” Douglas told the Guardian.
