Netflix movies leaving in August 2017

You have less than a week to watch “Babe” on Netflix. Even more importantly, you have less than a week to watch “Babe: Pig in the City.” Are you not one of the cool kids who knows the sequel is better than the already delightful first? It’s understandable why “Pig in the City” was hated upon release (except by Siskel & Ebert, who knew what was what up): It was quite a lot different from the first. It was darker. It was upsetting. Kids of 1998 were no doubt traumatized by the sight of Mickey Rooney as a drunk clown. But these are pluses, not minuses, and if you’re not aware that it’s an undersung classic, better get on that, Hi. And did you know it’s directed by George Miller, of “Mad Max” fame?

The “Babe” diptych isn’t the only thing departing Netflix come August. “Superbad” is outta here, too, though it’s resurfacing over at streaming rival Amazon Prime. So is “Dope,” the mostly solid comedy about nerdy South Central teens fumbling through the drug biz. You won’t be able to drink in Heath Ledger’s dubious breakthrough: that “Taming of the Shrew”-for-teens romp “10 Things I Hate About You,” in which the future Joker croons Frankie Valli.

There are also some old movies vacating — because Netflix already has so many of those! Did you even know “To Kill a Mockingbird” was on there? Or Sidney Lumet’s “The Verdict,” boasting one of the all-time Paul Newman turns? Do you even know what “Dirty Mary Crazy Larry” is? (A. One of the ’70s many grungy car movies, featuring Peter Fonda. You should watch this.)

A quick aloha to Cameron Crowe’s “Elizabethtown.” It’s the movie that officially doomed the once-beloved “Jerry Maguire” director, earning untold scorn and poor box office, and consigning him to director limbo. (He wouldn’t make another film for six years, with 2011’s “We Bought a Zoo,” which we swear isn’t bad.) It definitely earned some of that ire. But it has its moments — a lot of them. We miss Crowe’s silly-sincere voice in the movies. Dude needs a comeback — or at least a director’s cut of the even more unfairly maligned “Aloha.”
