NYC’s wackiest burgers

For National Burger Month (as if you needed a reason to eat a burger), we rounded up some of the wackiest patties this city has to offer.

The big bite

You certainly won’t find the Mac & Cheese burger on any nutritionist’s plan, but for a decadent dinner, it’s the best of two comfort foods. Executive Chef Clifford Crooks fries up a mac ‘n cheese patty in béchamel sauce, then plops it on a burger with balsamic-caramelized onions and smoked ketchup.

The “You’re gonna need silverware”

Pounds and Ounces
160 Eighth Ave., 646-449-8150
Pounds and Ounces is throwing a patty party all month, with a different burger each day until May 31. We’re especially excited for May 20th’s offering, the Fork and Knife, which is an 8 oz. patty topped with onion marmalade, fontina, pineapple-braised short ribs, and pickled green tomato chips on a parker roll. Check the calendar online at www.poundsandouncesnyc.com to find out when you should come in for the banh mi, fried chicken, mahi mahi and (gasp) donut varieties.

The newbie

Michelen-starred chef Andy Yang has 10 Southeast Asian inspired beef burgers on his new Rhong Tiam truck, which just made its debut in the city (it comes after a successful stint with the Rhong Tiam Pad Thai Cart in 2012). Forget the deli patty melt and line up for varieties like the Korean BBQ (kimchi, pickled daikon, hijiki, lettuce, Thai tomago and barbecue sauce) or the Yang (caramelized mushrooms and onions, basil, chili, Sriracha aioli). Look for Yang and his truck around the Flatiron district.

The “Just like mom’s”

Chef Brett Reichler has created two off-the-menu burgers for the month, including the Mom’s Meatloaf burger, which is two slices of beef- and pork-blended meatloaf, topped with brown gravy and sautéed onions and served on a toasted peppercorn brioche bun. It joins the West Coast Burger, which is a beef patty layered with avocado, cheddar, sliced red onions and homemade salsa verde.

No roundup would be complete without Danny Meyer’s real-life hamburger heaven. Throughout May, pop by for a ShackBurger or our personal favorite, the ShackStack (a cheeseburger topped with a fried portabella mushroom) and donate $2 or more to No Kid Hungry — you’ll receive a card for a complimentary shake (a $5 value) on your next visit.
