Patti LuPone returns to Carnegie Hall

You ~~gays~~ guys, get excited: It’s Patti LuPone. And it’s not just the diva herself, which would be exciting if she were wearing a potato sack and standing on a street corner in Midtown, but the grand duchess of Broadway is coming to the biggest stage in town (figuratively speaking) — the impressive gilded auditorium of Carnegie Hall.

On Nov. 7, Patti LuPone will be singing an array of melodies about travel and wanderlust, called “Far Away Places.” We were privileged to see the original show last summer at 54 Below, the newest dinner/cabaret hot spot for theater-lovers. She was incredible. When she brushed past our table to make her exit from the stage, the stir of air and draft of perfume in her wake gave us chills. That’s formally known as celebrity kinesis, which is science; look it up.

Songs in this solo show will include hits from Cole Porter and Edith Piaf. The show is conceived by Scott Wittman with musical direction from Joseph Thalken. This is LuPone’s fifth solo show at Carnegie Hall, the most recent being “The Lady with the Torch” — all the way back in 2005. That only goes to show that good things come to those who wait!

The entire night is probably going to be unforgettable for those who attend. But don’t try to duck out during the first round of hearty applause, no matter how long it lasts or how certain you are that this is the end of the show. Based on our experience last June, we’d have to advise that you plan to stick around for at least one, if not three, spectacular encores. Patti LuPone is a lady who knows how to close out a night.
