British comedian Stephen Fry can’t take the social media heat, so he’s getting out of the Twitter kitchen. The sharp-tongued cultural critic raised eyebrows while hosting the BAFTAs in London this weekend when he made a quip about “Mad Max: Fury Road” costume designer Jenny Beavan’s ensemble.

“Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady,” he joked as she left the stage.

And viewers at home were not pleased, launching an uproar of responses online. That’s apparently where Fry drew the line.

“Will all you sanctimonious f—ers f– the f– off? Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet,” he tweeted.

Apparently he settled for Twitter instead of the earth, though, posting to his website that he has deleted his account. “If you don’t watch yourself, with every move you’ll end up being gashed, broken, bruised or contused.” This is not, however, the first time Fry has quit Twitter, so he’ll likely be back.
