Awards season got its official start yesterday with the announcement of the nominees for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards. “The King’s Speech,” a favorite with critics and a big winner earlier this year at the Toronto Film Festival, led the pack with seven nominations, including Best Motion Picture: Drama and Best Actor: Drama, for star Colin Firth. Fellow Best Motion Picture: Drama contenders “The Fighter” and “The Social Network” each nabbed six nominations, with “Black Swan” and “Inception” rounding out the top category.
The biggest surprises in film came in the Musical or Comedy category, with four of the five nominees for Best Picture going to “Burlesque,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Red” and “The Tourist,” all of which received tepid critical receptions at best. Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right” was also nominated. “The Tourist” also pulled in nominations for leads Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, who is also nominated for his performance as the Mad Hatter in “Alice in Wonderland.”
Cable once again reigned supreme in the dramatic TV categories, with CBS’s “The Good Wife” the only broadcast show nominated for Best Series: Drama, going up against HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” Showtime’s “Dexter” and AMC’s “Mad Men” and “The Walking Dead.” The networks fared better on the comedy side, with “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Glee” and “Modern Family” going up against cable series “The Big C” and “Nurse Jackie.”
