The great thing about made-up, meaningless awards is that they totally work. Present people with the prospect of a shiny statue and they will, despite their own best judgment, become incredibly upset if the wrong person eventually owns it.
That's nowhere more evident than the MTV Video Music Awards, where passions get bizarrely inflamed over who gets to take home the Moonmen. There was no microphone-grabbing this year (Taylor Swift kept a good firm grip) but One Direction did get booed when "Best Song Ever" nabbed the award for Song of the Summer over more ubiquitous tunes like "Blurred Lines" and "Get Lucky." But Lady Gaga, for one, will not brook such rudeness to those nice young men.
"I want to leave right now . . . I don't want to stay anymore because I don't want to be in a room where people are booing," she told the band backstage, according to Us Magazine. But she stuck around to take photos with them in her seashell bra. That probably made them feel better.
The 2013 MTV VMAs rolled into Brooklyn on Sunday night, bringing twerking teens, passive-aggressive behavior from Taylor Swift and a reunion more hotly anticipated than your high school’s 10-year.
Lady Gaga kicked off the night with a performance of her new single, “Applause,” Macklemore raked in the Moonmen, and, oh yeah, ‘NSYNC reunited. Read Metro’s full recap for all the big moments.
