“Potted Potter” is a two-man show.
Fans who were thrilled to learn that J.K. Rowling is penning a whole new film series set in the wizarding world can get their magic fix early with “Potted Potter.” Well, sort of.
“We’re basically rehab for Potter fans,” says Dan Clarkson, who wrote and performs in the madcap comedy with partner Jeff Turner.
The show parodies all seven “Harry Potter” books in just 70 minutes which, as any loyal reader knows, is no small feat. So, how do they cover 4,000-plus pages in just over an hour?
“As loyal as we try to be with the plot of the story, we do often kick out 500 pages of important dialogue, just so I can wear a funny hat and do a silly voice,” admits Clarkson.
Turner plays Harry Potter throughout the show, which leaves Clarkson portraying “all 360 other characters,” says the performer.
“I love playing Voldemort,” says Clarkson. “He’s just very misunderstood. You’re the darkest and most powerful wizard of all time and being beaten at every turn by an 11-year-old schoolboy. That’s not going to be good for your ego. All he wanted was a nice hug.”
The “Harry Potter” books aren’t generally classified as comedies, but the guys behind this critically lauded show don’t struggle for laughs.
“I’m 6 feet, 4 inches tall, and as soon as you see me playing Hermione Granger the seriousness goes out the window,” says Clarkson.
Clarkson’s personal favorite part of the show is a live quidditch match played with the audience. Sound dangerous? “Oh, it is,” says Clarkson wryly. “There’s always the risk of serious injury when you go see a show. Otherwise it’s not fun.”
Diehard fans need not worry that this parody makes fun of their favorite story, however.
“We are those fans!” says Clarkson. “I was there when the books came out, dressed as a wizard, lining up at midnight, pushing small children out of the way so I could get to the books first.”
