‘Game of Thrones’ fans are pretty sure Samwell Tarly is the most important character of all

As the final season of “Game of Thrones” starts to unwind on the screen, fans picked up on a tiny clue this week that a popular theory that would give Samwell Tarly the most important job of all: telling the story.

“Game of Thrones” fans are known for their theories, but this particular theory says that Sam writes the histories that end up becoming the “Game of Thrones.” Until episode 2 of the final season aired this past Sunday, there was little evidence to support such a theory, besides Sam’s unabashed love of books (oh year, and he bares a striking resemblance to “Game of Thrones” real-life author George R. R. Martin).

At this point in the series, Sam, on his way to becoming a maester, is finally in his element — surrounded by thousands of books in the robust Citadel libraries and episode 2 revealed a key clue that points to Sam someday writing “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the first book in the series, as Archmaester Ebrose and Sam as they gather books in the Citadel library.

“If you’re going to write histories, Tarly, you have to do the research,” Archmaester Ebrose lectures. “If you want people to read your histories, you need a bit of style. I’m not writing “The Chronicles of the Wars Following the Death of King Robert I” so it can sit on a shelf unread.”

Apparently Sam’s response wasn’t quite up to snuff for Archmaester Embrose, “What? You don’t like the title? What would you call it then?”

“Possibly something a bit more… poetic,” Sam replies.

Well, we’d say “A Song of Ice and Fire” certainly waxes a bit more poetic than the Archmaester’s suggestions — wouldn’t you?

So is Samwell Tarly supposed to be George R. R. Martin?

Author Martin has even gone so far as to say Tarwell is the character who most resembles himself.

“I would probably be Samwell Tarly. I love Sam, too. He’s a great character,” Martin said at a ComicCon in San Diego in 2014. “Tyrion might be who I want to be, but Sam is probably closer to who I actually am. The fat kid who likes to read books and doesn’t like to go up a lot of stairs.”

Foreshadowing much?

Hopefully Sam will finish the books before Martin.
