VIDEO: New Yorkers try to explain memes

What’s a meme? You probably know what it is, but can you explain it? The question left us scratching our heads, and we’re not alone: Writer/director Alex J. Mann couldn’t either, and he decided to see if New Yorkers could do better.

Mann interviewed dozens of passersby in New York to see if they could explain what a meme is. Some get more intellectual than others, with one man describing the etymology of the word “meme,” starting with Richard Dawkins. Others are less so, with one man simply saying, “I would like Miley Cyrus to take a s– on me.” One thing’s for sure, though – no one really nails it on the head.

For the record, Dictionary.com defines a meme as “an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, esp. imitation.
