Will Idris Elba be the next James Bond?

This rumor has already been slightly refuted by the man himself but it’s just so juicy I couldn’t help but get on the bandwagon: The Internet is trying to make Idris Elba the next James Bond.

A fan group called We Want Idris Elba for James Bond is going so strong (and makes so much sense) that Elba is being asked in interviews if it could possibly happen.

“It’s a rumor that’s gotten out of control, basically — but that’s all it is,” Elba said on ITV’s “Lorraine” over the weekend, thus starting a new drumbeat of support on social media. “There’s no truth in it whatsoever.”

Earlier in November, the actor, who just landed two Golden Globe nominations for “Mandela” and “Luther,” seemed a bit more open to the suggestion. “Really? James Bond? I didn’t know that was still sort of in the mix,” Elba told HuffPost Entertainment. “I say it all the time, but if it was to ever happen and if I was ever to get offered that role, that would be the will of a nation. That would be like, ‘Wow, human beings are really powerful. They really made that happen, because [producer Barbara Broccoli] certainly didn’t.’ … It would be the will of a nation because everyone has been saying that to me.”

The Internet makes so many, usually terrible things happen (Rebecca Black, “Snakes on a Plane,” “Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus”). Wouldn’t it be nice if something amazing and sexy — and that would be Idris Elba in a hot bow tie and martini glass — came from it as well?
