A taxpayer watchdog group is expecting to see at least a $3 billion deficit when the province unveils its 2009 budget today and are calling for deep cuts.
Scott Hennig of the Canadian Taxpayer Federation said tough decisions need to be made now to ensure the Alberta advantage isn’t dashed.
“We were calling for a seven per cent cut in spending in December and they’d probably need to cut it by more than 10 per cent to bring in a balanced budget,” he said.
Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier said despite the looming deficit, he hopes Premier Stelmach doesn’t renege on the $3.3-billion municipal infrastructure deal for Calgary, as well as finding money for policing.
