3 easy weekend getaways

It’s almost time to wave bye-bye to those long summer weekends and send the kids back to school. So steal one last getaway with a stay at one of these hotels. From a quaint bed and breakfast to beach resorts, here are three not-too-far-away escapes that will help you make the most of the remaining weeks of warmth.

Copper Beech Inn

Copper Beech Inn Copper Beech Inn

This traditional B&B offers peace and tranquility, and a place to eat. The award-winning Oak Room restaurant serves upscale fare; locals tend to reserve the venue for special occasions, while guests in town for a brief stay can count on at least one romantic evening. Through Nov. 16, you can visit Copper Beech Inn through the Raise the Curtain deal, which grants you not only a $100 credit for the Oak Room and free breakfast, but also Super Deluxe accommodations and tickets to the historic Ivoryton Playhouse (www.ivorytonplayhouse.org), made famous by the likes of Katharine Hepburn and Marlon Brando. Through Aug. 31, catch Harvey Fierstein’s Tony Award-winning “La Cage Au Faux.” In September, Mike Reiss’ new “Comedy Is Hard!” takes over.

Water’s Edge Resort and Spa

Water's Edge Resort & Spa Water’s Edge Resort and Spa

Less than half an hour away from Copper Beech is Water’s Edge Resort and Spa in Westbrook, Connecticut. The hotel is true to its name: It’s set right on the waterfront, with a private beach area. The newly refurbished Villas offer sensational views of the Long Island Sound. With an indoor pool and spa, you can enjoy the facilities in any weather. Sadly, the Spa at Water’s Edge does not actually overlook the water — but through Sept. 30 you can enjoy “seasonal specials” like the Mojito Scrub or Pina Colada Wrap, which come with a complimentary cocktail. For dining, try the stately Restaurant at Water’s Edge (featuring the “Best Brunch in Connecticut”), the upscale Seaview Bistro and Martini Bar or the casual Sunset Bar and Grill. Outdoor dining is seasonal.

Montauk Blue Hotel

Montauk Blue Hotel Montauk Blue Hotel

If you head to Montauk, in Easthampton, New York, for a few nights, you’ll want to make all of your time count. That’s why it’s tempting to stay at one of the few hotels that actually offers rooms facing the water with decks leading straight out to the beach. This year, Montauk Blue Hotel debuted renovated rooms overlooking the water. And the property, a staple of the area for 30 years, can also suggest several activities to do around town, like the Mon Tiki catamaran cruise (www.sailingmontauk.com), which is suitable for all ages and a great family option, or a few yoga sessions at Mindful Turtle Studios (www.mindfulturtle.com), which offers $5 off to guests of the hotel (inquire for further details). Before your arrival, be sure to make a reservation for Navy Beach (www.navybeach.com), a bustling restaurant with outdoor seating and a riveting view of sunset over the bay. Ask the front desk about hailing a taxi to take you there, since it’s a bit outside the main stretch of town.
