Stop eating your feelings

Celebrity nutritionist, yogi and New York Times best-selling author, Kimberly Snyder believes beauty starts from the inside out. In her latest book, “The Beauty Detox Power: Nourish Your Mind and Body for Weight Loss and Discover True Joy” she gives us the practices and recipes to live a holistic and happier life.

Building beauty from within
“We need to make sure there is a dynamic flow of energy throughout our bodies and things aren’t stagnating,” says the expert. “So what does that mean? It means digestion. If digestion isn’t functioning well, it means acids and wastes build up in your body and oxygen gets reduced. And it means that you age faster,” she explains. The easiest way to reverse this, stresses Snyder is to incorporate more fiber into your daily routine.

Kick start digestion
Snyder says one easy way to make sure everything is flowing is to start dinner with a green salad. “When you’re at a restaurant instead of going for the fancy or yummy seeming appetizer, just start with a salad,” she says. “Put that cushion of fiber in. It will help you digest whatever you eat afterwards.”

Glowing green smoothie

“Juice and smoothie are not the same thing,” warns Snyder. “Juice isn’t a whole food anymore. Nature grows fruits and vegetables with the juice and the fiber intact. With the juice you’re processing it and stripping out the fiber so now you’re left with is an incomplete fruit.” While Snyder, who owns a juice and smoothie bar in Los Angeles, does believe there are benefit to juices. “Juice is good to have for supplements,” she says. But the expert has build her system around her signature Glowing Green Smoothie. “The smoothie is what you need to start your day with,” she says. “Loading up in the morning with a heavy amount of fats and protein can bring all of your energy to your gut, and make you feel so tired you need coffee by 10:30 a.m. The fiber is what’s going to help stabilize your blood sugar, the fiber is what’s going to keep you full for longer periods. It’s not just what we’re putting in our bodies, but it’s that we’re efficiently pushing out all the waste. That’s how you have more energy, and that’s how you’re able to sustain your weight over time.”

Why you should drink hot water and lemon
The other morning routine Snyder recommends is drinking hot water with lemon in the morning. It’s something we often hear about but don’t really know why. “We want to start the body on an up, not a down, and lemon is one of the most alkalizing foods in the body,” says Snyder. “Lemon is very special, it has hundreds of citrus acid enzymes that support your liver tissue and lots of vitamin C. Your liver is your detoxifying organ, you’re fat burning organ. Before we go out into the polluting world, give it some nourishment and support.”

Have a relaxed morning
“The rhythms and practices we follow in life are going to determine how we look and how we feel long-term,” says Snyder. A simple morning practices she has all her clients do is to take three minutes at the start of the day. “It actually starts the night before by putting your phone in airplane mode,” explains Snyder. “This cuts down on EMS and helps cuts down on radiation.” The other benefit is it forces us to relax in the morning. “Before you get out of bed, before reaching for your phone and being pulled in a million different directions, take three minutes to become centered. When you’re centered before you start your day, you’re going to become less reactive including with your food choices and dietary choices. And really when you think about it, it’s just three minutes. It’s so simple and so powerful.”
