Since your dog is a bona fide family member, diet is important. Many store-bought dog foods contain allergens like wheat and dairy that are unhealthy for our cuddly pals. There was even a major recall of some brand-name dog foods in 2007.
Olivia Roszkowski had two puppies at the time and realized the importance of giving dogs the best-quality food. As a culinary student learning to cook for herself and other humans, Roszkowski decided to adopt that knowledge for her dogs. After the switch, “I saw a difference in their coats, in their energy levels and in their general disposition,” she says.
As for ingredients, she sticks to animal protein and organic, seasonal veggies. “When you cook at home, you know exactly what you’re putting in your food,” she says. “You have quality control.”
When transitioning to a homemade-food diet, the change should be gradual. Stay away from chocolate, grapes, garlic and onions, as those can be poisonous. But dogs do like variety, so switch it up. “People tend to stick with one food if it works,” she says. “Variety ensures dogs will get all their nutrients.”
This bread can be made in advance and frozen for a quick and easy weekday doggie dinner. The crisp exterior and chewy center is sure to please any canine palate.
1/4 cup organic coconut oil, plus more for greasing
2 cups boneless, cooked, free-range turkey breast, shredded
1 small zucchini, grated (about 1 cup)
2 organic eggs, beaten
1 cup quinoa flour (can substitute brown rice flour)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a baking dish with coconut oil. Stir the coconut oil, turkey, zucchini, eggs and flour in a medium bowl, until well combined. Transfer to baking dish and bake for 30 minutes or until golden. Slice and cool before serving to your dog. Refrigerate any leftovers.
