You can’t tell from this outfit, but Eva Mendes says she loves wearing colors and prints.
Double-stick tape can’t always save your outfit, so if you find yourself cowering because you’re popping out of your top, Eva Mendes says ditch the look.
Her advice: Wear what you feel comfortable in — in her case, that means a ladylike outfit, like one of the many looks she’s designed as part of her new line for New York & Companyoffeminine dresses, sophisticated separates and a whole lot of color and print, all inspired by the bombshell’s personal style.
At a recent party for the collection, she broke down her design process and told us what she’s craving for fall.
What’s your go-to look for a night out?
I would probably wear this. [Her pencil skirt and fitted Mila blouse.] I think it’s chic, it’s really comfortable. It’s very ladylike, very classy. I don’t think I’ve ever been into short and super-sexy looks. I always like [being] a bit more demure. And when I have gone more body-conscious in the past, I’ve regretted the decision.
What is your style mantra?
You just have to feel great in [what you’re wearing]. I mean, I love double-stick tape, it really works magic — but if you find yourself using too much double-stick I think you better rethink the size of your outfit or get something you feel more comfortable in, because that’s the key to looking great.
What are you looking forward to wearing now that it’s fall?
Coats! I love coats, so I designed two of my favorite coats. That’s what I’m looking forward to. I also love Celine. I think Prada is always exciting and Dolce & Gabbana know how to make a dress for a woman like nobody else.
On creating her own line:
“For every piece I designed, I have an emotional reason for it. Ever since high school, I have loved bodysuits. It’s just nostalgic for me. You don’t see enough body suits out there. And I think pencil skirts fit every type of body. I have a reason for each piece.”
