After spending all day in the chaos of the city, coming home and feeling at peace is important to your well-being. Your home should be your sanctuary, a place to refuel and relax. There's a way to balance the energy in your home so you're the happiest you can be, and that way is feng shui. And it isn't as new age-y as you may think. "Feng Shui is about loving your home and having a supportive environment," says Tisha Morris, author of "Mind, Body, Home." Here, she shares her tips on how you can feng shui your home.
You aren't going to feel energized or relaxed if your apartment is messy. "A lot of people want to add more to their home, but the first step is to remove what's no longer working," Morris says. "This could be piles of paper on the kitchen table or furniture items that aren't functional or taking up too much space."
Choose functional furniture
Especially in a small apartment, you have to be choosy with your furniture. "Everything has to be something you use or love, preferably both," Morris says. "If a side-table is just sitting there because someone gave it to you and you think you should have it, you should really think twice about it." When it comes to furniture placement, Morris says it's important to leave space for energy to flow through, like a river. Again, a room cluttered with furniture won't put you in a good mood. If you keep bumping into something, that's a tell-tale sign it's out of flow and you either need to move it or get rid of it.
Use colors and wall art to create a vibe
Most people know wall color has a strong effect on a room. When it comes to choosing paint colors, Morris says the most important thing is to pick colors you love. "Color association trumps color theory," she says. But for some general guidelines: blues and browns are known to be relaxing, making them great choices for the bedroom. "The living room is where our personality comes out, so choose a color that's a reflection of you. Some of us are more neutral and some of us are louder and like bright colors," Morris says.
What you put on the walls is important too. "Artwork is something you need to be really conscious of because art sends subliminal messages," Morris says. "You wouldn't want a picture of a busy New York street in your bedroom; you want more of a tranquil ocean scene. The living room is a great place for a city photo though."
Keep doorways clear
According to Morris, piling your shoes and winter gear near the door prohibits energy from flowing through. "Doors in general represent opportunity and the front door represents major opportunities, she says. "The door is like a breath. If it's clogged up, then the incoming breath into the space is going to get clogged up. Try to keep only the essentials by the door and store your winter items when it's spring and summer."
Add flowers and candles
When it comes to greenery, plants and flowers are always a good addition - as long as they're living. Morris says they absorb negative energy and add a rejuvenating scent to the air. Lighting candles or using diffusers can also change the mood of the room. Morris says to use scents that are most comforting to you, though in general lavender and rose are relaxing, making them perfect for the bedroom.
