It’s summertime in Boston and the living’s easy, with Furnished Quarters

Home hunting at this time of year is an unpleasant endeavor for buyers and renters alike. It seems like everyone and their mother is interested in the same space and beating you to it — whether in terms of price or literally arriving at a showing first. Add Boston’s temporary seasonal residents — summer term professors and students enrolled in summer programs — to the mix and the apartment hunt becomes even more torturous. That’s where Furnished Quarters comes in. This short-term apartment rental company, headquartered in Central Square, leases fully-furnished studio and one and two bedroom apartments for 30, 60 or 90-day terms. Right now, with the spring real estate market on the rise, the company’s business is booming.

“The tight market is definitely having an effect on our business, too,” says Annette Clement,Executive Vice President and GM. “People who are home hunting, or even renovating, are using us until they find or finish their homes. May to November is our busiest time anyway. In the summer, what with MIT, Harvard, and the Sloane School, and visiting professors and summer programs, we are at our peak.”

Furnished Quarters fills a niche market for those who are in search of a place that falls somewhere between a hotel room and a rented apartment, cutting the cost of the former and the long-term contract of the latter. They offer high-end apartments that come complete with everything you’d want in your own home — from towels to throw rugs, as well as complimentary WiFi, cable television, and unlimited local telephone service. What’s more, their digs are rather stylish.

“For visitors, it’s the best way to experience the city because you’re living next door to a local, not another visitor,” says Clement. “It feels more like you really live here.”

How it works

Furnished Quarters, which has branches in four other states, operates in 11 buildings throughout Boston, Cambridge and Brookline. The company has 150 apartments starting at around $4,500 per month for a one-bedroom, including all utilities. Prices are highest in the summer, but there’s no security deposit required. “Having a fully-equipped kitchen saves so much money on dining,” adds Clement. “But, like a hotel, there’s a housekeeping service. It really is the best of both worlds.” For more info call 617-236-4908 or visit
