When Michelle Williams, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz need to get red carpet-ready, they head to renowned aesthetician Joanna Vargas’ romantic and cozy Midtown spa for her signature treatments, including the Triple Crown Facial, which exfoliates, purifies, de-puffs and tones the visage.
“It’s a combination of some of the best technologies in skincare,” says Vargas. “The thing that people love about this treatment is you can really see a result right away. You don’t have to rely on faith.”
The expert recently received a patent for another high-tech breakthrough: Time Machine, a full-body LED light bed, which helps clients look younger without any invasive Botox or surgery. We stopped by to learn more about this exclusive anti-aging treatment and get plenty of advice on how to keep our skin looking flawless all summer long — and beyond.
Your summer skin-care routine:
• Exfoliate twice a week.
• Wash your face every night.
• Absolutely apply sunscreen every day. “For everyday use, SPF 30 is sufficient,” says Vargas. “On the weekends if you’re going to be out by the pool or out in the park, then you have to wear something like a 58 and it has to have zinc and titanium. You can’t get Coppertone.”
Vargas’ beauty advice:
See a nutritionist
“I recommend clients see a nutritionist when they have a skin condition they are trying to fix. The skin is a window into what is happening on the inside of us, and more specifically, our digestive system. Seeing a doctor like Frank Lipman just makes sense. “
In addition to wearing sunscreen...
“Wash your face at night before bed! Your body repairs itself at night and that won’t happen without you removing all the dirt and grime of the day.”
Drink green juices
“A green juice a day keeps the skin clean and glowing. It’s a great replacement for your afternoon coffee and it will literally transform your skin in a matter of days. Green juice helps oxygenate the skin and stimulates lymphatic drainage so it’s de-puffing, too. I love juice with romaine, celery, cucumber, spinach, parsley, kale and apple with a dash of lemon and ginger.”
Vargas on the Time Machine
“NASA paid grants to physicians in the ’80s and ‘90s to study the effects of light on the human body. What was discovered was that light builds collagen in quantifiable percentages. It reduces inflammation, and it speeds the healing of the body by 300 percent. I’ve been using light on the face for years, but clients kept on saying, ‘I wish I could have a full body of this.’ Or they were requesting body parts like wrinkly knees or loose arms. Obviously, as you get older you are concerned with collagen building all over your body, not just the face, so I looked to see if there were beds on the market. There was nothing available so I had one engineered to my specifications.”

“It has zinc in it so it has around SPF 20.”
“It’s translucent and I wear it over my makeup or even when I have a naked face. You can carry it in your purse and it absorbs the oil on your face.”
“It’s very simple and hydrating.”
