Magnolia Bakery says ‘I do’ to wedding cakes

Magnolia Bakery wedding cake Metro’s cake featured a 6-inch tier of marble cake and a 4-inch tier of devil’s food cake with raspberry filling; it served a dozen guests at our staffer’s wedding luncheon. The vanilla buttercream icing was an ombre of purple to white in rosettes.

Trays of cupcakes are all the rage at weddings right now, but Magnolia Bakery devotees can now choose to make their favorite treat more of a focal point on their big day — because the shop has started offering tiered wedding cakes.

After countless requests, and a few special orders, the bakery realized that it needed to consider making this an official option for its dedicated fans (many of whom you can still see lining up outside the store daily to buy the coveted sweets).

Naturally, Metro had to go investigate — and there’s almost always a wedding around the corner these days among our staff, so we set up a cake tasting and placed an order to see how everything worked out. Now, we can assure you firsthand that it was both efficient and delicious (just check out that mouthwatering photo).

Here’s what you need to know to make Magnolia part of your own magical day:

1. Taste: The first step is to schedule a tasting of flavor combos that catch your eye on the menu (the Hummingbird is a must-try). Sweep past the line at the counter like a VIP and take a seat in the party room in the back. You’ll be offered coffee and tea while your sample cakes are sent out. Bite by bite, you can decide which icing, filling and cake type you prefer (pro tip: bring a notebook). We were also sent home with the remains of our cakes for the rest of Metro to enjoy!

2. Design: Next, you get to design your cake. Although tasting tiny cakes will make you feel pretty fancy, the most fun part of the whole process is actually getting to go through Magnolia’s lookbook to create your own slice of heaven. To whet your artistic appetite, categories are: Magnolia Bakery Classics, Lacework & Ruffles, Rosettes & Flowers, Beading & Pearls or Fancy Frills.

3. Order: Then, you place an order. Magnolia is happy to help you figure out what size will work for your headcount. Provide the date, a window of time (about three hours’ wiggle room) and any extra instructions: Is your wedding planner going to meet the delivery person at your venue? Are there any phone numbers the driver should have on hand? Once that’s arranged, you get a confirmation emailed to you so that you can make sure everything looks good.
