You’ve already decided to ditch junk food, ban the booze and go to the gym three times a week — but what about your personal style? To help keep you looking your best well after the excitement of the new year has fizzled, we’ve got some tops tips from Marissa Webb, creative director at Banana Republic.

Indulge in denim

“Banish the winter blues with strong denim pieces,” says Webb. And have fun with your favorite staple. “Stock up on rich indigos, pale chambrays in different proportions and [a variety of] textures.”

Khaki is the new black

“Forget everything you thought you knew about khaki. It really is the key color for the spring,” insists Webb. Don’t believe her? Just look at some of the biggest spring fashion shows including Jason Wu, Ralph Lauren and Gucci. Webb’s suggestions for the best pieces to incorporate the color into your wardrobe: “a go-to trench, a short sweater and soft, supple leather.”

Steal from the boys

This year, invest in staple masculine items, like a perfectly tailored suit with the one white shirt that will last you forever. Webb loves rocking a boy-meets-girl look: “It can be as literal as contrasting a boyfriend blazer with a sexy pair of super skinny jeans and heels,” she says. “Or it could be finding pieces designed for women, but taking obvious design cues from men’s tailoring.”

Use dresses as your go-to

Rotate your usual denim uniform with dresses. “They’re more versatile than you think,” says Webb. “Throw-on a pair of skinny jeans underneath, and wear it as a tunic by day and bare leg by night.” For spring, Webb says to be on the look out for “modern takes on eyelet and lace in black, white, coral and violet.”
