The times, they are a-changin’.
Sexting and cyberbullying are just a couple of the 400 additional words in the new 12th edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary. Pretty progressive, considering that little squiggly red line still appears below them in Microsoft Word. Rest assured, though. They are real words.
The new edition also includes domestic goddess, woot, gastric band, textspeak and slow food (what is slow food? Look it up).
The dictionary has certainly come a long way since its first edition in 1911 when flapper, foozle, bungle and piffle were included as slang words.
“Sadly, the new edition has no room for tremendous words like brabble ‘paltry noisy quarrel’ and growlery ‘place to growl in, private room, den’ – what we might call a man cave these days,” says editor Angus Stevenson.
We’re still waiting for “de-friend” to be included.
