Harry Potter has been around just long enough that some original fans of the series – who started reading when they were teenagers — can now share it with their children.
If that’s you, then steer your broomsticks toward “Potted Potter,” which combines Potter jokes, quick banter and audience participation to provide a family-friendly wizard fix.
The zippy 75-minute show, playing in Boston Sept. 17 through Oct. 6,attempts to squeeze all the events of the seven Potter books into just over an hour. The show sprouted after creators Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner were commissioned to do a smaller version for fans lining up for the sixth book.
The two characters – one at times a bit confused about what exactly happens in the book – don wigs and other costumes, portraying everything from Professors Dumbledore and Snape to, of course, the boy wizard himself.
The show hurdles over a difficult barrier – making shows enjoyable for both parents and children.
Sarcasm and witty banter suffice for parents, especially those familiar with the Potter books.
And children will be able to appreciate the humor and gags and especially a seemingly impromptu game of Quidditch, the wizard world’s favorite sport.
“Potted Potter” closes in New York Sept. 1, before launching the national tour.
