Schoolhouse to hip Jamaica Plain lofts

Two sprawling penthouses are the last units available at a converted schoolhouse in Jamaica Plain, offering potential buyers a taste of the old and the new.

The Wyman school, which is now home to 13 lofts, was built in 1892 and was a functioning school until 2004. First it served as a local elementary school, then in later years as a program for autistic children.

“It’s an interesting juxtaposition. It’s an old schoolhouse but it’s very contemporary,” say Scott Johnson, a broker with William Raveis Real Estate, which is marketing the units.

The two penthouses are on the market for $659,000 and $689,000, both with roof decks and sprawling views of the city. They have high-end kitchens with sleek cabinets, a Viking stove, Bosch dishwasher and dark-stained floors.

The units are triplexes with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open mezzanine on the second level, which could be used as a game room, living area or office space, says Johnson. “They are flex spaces and look down onto the first floor. They have 16-foot ceilings.”
