Six last minute Halloween costumes made from a Metro newspaper

So here’s the situation: it’s officially October 31 and you have waited to the last possible minute to get your act together with a Halloween Costume. For some reason you have absolutely nothing in your house that you can wear, and time is a ticking.

But wait, you happen to have a copy of Metro and access to the internet! And look! We’ve published a guide to six costumes you can make with that copy of Metro!

We won’t take any awards or compensation. We’ll just take the satisfaction that you won’t be without a costume to wear this Halloween.

If you take a shot at making any of these last minute costumes, take a picture and share it on social with #MetroHalloweenDIY so we can see your hard work!

Here are your options from easiest to hardest:

Start with one sheet of newspaper.

Fold this sheet in half along its center seam.

Fold either corner into the center of the paper to form a peak.

Fold the lower half of the paper over the lower section of the peak. Do this on both sides.

Tape down the ends and open it like a taco. Voila! You have a really simple sailor’s hat!

Start with two sheets of newspaper.

Make a sailor hat (see directions for how to make a sailor hat above) and tape or staple down the side edges as well as the top peak.

Take your second sheet of newspaper and cut out a red section of the paper (there will for sure be some sort of red ad).

Make a cross with the red strips.

Tape your red cross to the front of your nurses!

Start with two sheets of newspaper.

Make a sailor hat (see directions for how to make a sailor hat above) but do not tape down the edges. Cut out a jagged mouth!

Take your second sheet of newspaper and cut out a red section of the paper (there will for sure be some sort of red ad). Cut your red slip of paper into the shape of a snake’s tongue.

Draw a pair of eyes on either side of the mask and tape the tongue into the mouth! Now you have a snake!

Start with three sheets of newspaper.

Take two pieces of newspaper and lay them directly on top of each other. Fold in either corner to make a larger version of a sailor’s hat.

Staple together the ends.

Cut out a jagged mouth and pair of eyes. Make sure these are very large.

Take your third sheet of paper and fold it lengthwise until it’s about an inch wide. Fit this to the size of your head and staple it top either side of your mask!

Start with ten sheets of newspaper.

Take one sheet and wrap it into a narrow cone.

Take a second sheet and wrap it into a slightly narrower cone.

Slip one cone into the other and tape them together. Take another sheet of paper and fold it lengthwise till it’s about two inches wide. Wrap it around the opening of the cone and staple it to the cone.

Take two more sheets of paper. Fold one lengthwise till its about an inch wide. Take the other sheet of paper and grab it by the middle of the sheet’s center seam. Wave it into a flame shape (think of it the same way you would shape a tissue for stuffing a gift bag).

Staple that flame in between either end of the folded strip of newspaper.

Slip the flame and its stem into the cone and you now have a torch!

Fold two more sheets of paper lengthwise till they are about an inch wide.

Take a sheet of paper and tear it in half widthwise down the middle. Fold these halves into a quarter. To make the spikes follow the directions above. Repeat this five times.

Fit the two long strips of paper around your head and staple them together. Staple your five spikes to this crown.

You now have the makings to be lady liberty herself.

Start with eight sheets of newspaper.

Fold four of theses sheets like the two strips in the picture above.

Fit two of the strips to the size of your head. Make two arches and staple their ends to the rim.

Take two more sheets and make a large sailor hat (the same way you would for the shark mask above). Fold the peak over or tuck the peak into the hat.

Fold in either corner into the hat and tape them down.

Stuff the hat into the crown and staple the bottom of the hat top the rim.

Take two more sheets of paper and fold them lengthwise till they are a little more than two inches wide. Wrap these strips around the crown.

Ball up a sheet of newspaper and tape the bottom.

Take another sheet of paper and make a cross (it can be however big you would like it to be). Tape this cross to the ball.

Glue the bottom of the ball to the cross of the arches of the crown.

Don’t you just feel regal now?
