The Word: Discovery Channel fires Bear Grylls

Bear Grylls has no qualms about drinking his own urine on national television — and this is the thanks he gets? In shocking TV news, it was announced yesterday that the Discovery Channel has fired the popular, hunky outdoorsman after the network was unable to get the “Man Vs. Wild” star to participate in two unannounced projects he was contracted for, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The British star has been with the Discovery Channel since 2006, and in that time has become an international sensation — channeling the show’s popularity into endorsement deals with Dockers and Degree deodorant, as well as numerous book deals, an iPhone app, his own clothing line and a video game.

Strange: Of course Grylls should honor his contract, but it’s hard to believe that the Discovery Channel would so abruptly fire one of its most successful personalities. Considering this guy has bitten off the head of a snake for breakfast, you kind of have to wonder what was in that contract that he would do.
