Usher has inspired many people to pursue entertainment, but today, he’s inspiring others to do something simple: give back. Last month, the singer hosted a live classroom webcast with 3 million students encouraging for them to think of ways to help others. He promised them he would give a donation of books and asked the students to pick out which charities should be on the recieving end.

Headed by The Scholastic Possible Fund, which provides donations of new books to children in underserved communities, and New Look, a charity Usher founded in 1999 with the aim of confronting the education crisis in underserved communities, the awarded charities were announced today: Toys for Tots, Save the Children and Room to Read. Usher is delivering in a big way by donating 100,000 books.

“We know from research that when children discover a book they love, they are motivated to read more, understand more, and learn more. When that happens, everything is possible,” Scholastic Chairman, President and CEO Dick Robinson says in a statement. “We applaud all the work that Toys for Tots, Save the Children and Room to Read do to ‘Open a World of Possible’ for children in the U.S. and around the world by giving them wonderful new books and stories to experience, enjoy, and own.”

It’s just another reminder what this holiday season is really about.
