A new food app aims to give the world a taste for saving the planet.
Food Monster, created by the team behind the website One Green Planet, offers users the chance to try 5,000 recipes, including cauliflower rice stir fry, baked lemon cheesecake, and skillet eggplant and BBQ tacos.
The U.S.-based company’s plan to make the world greener is very simple: if we consume fewer meat and dairy products, two of the leading causes of greenhouse gas emissions, our carbon footprint is reduced.
Nil Zacharias, co-founder and editor in chief of One Green Planet, explains how this app can fight against climate change.
Why did you decide to create a vegan app?
One Green Planet’s core underlying vision has always been to connect the food we eat to its impact on the planet. As part of this vision, we focused on incorporating recipes as a cornerstone of One Green Planet’s content right in the beginning. The goal was to showcase recipes from everyday bloggers across the world, highlighting the breadth and depth of possibilities when it comes to cooking without meat, dairy or eggs.
This commitment to building the most compelling and delicious assortment of homemade vegan recipes is the reason why today, One Green Planet boasts the Internet’s largest collection of vegan recipes. With everyone using their smartphones in the kitchen these days, the logical next step was to translate One Green Planet’s popular vegan recipe category into a cutting-edge, user-friendly mobile app.
What’s the aim of this app?
The purpose of the app is to get more people to choose plant-based foods when they eat. The app makes it easy for anyone, across the world from any income bracket and with any dietary preference, restriction or waist size to easily access the greatest collection of recipes, which use simple ingredients found in regular grocery stores and easy-to-follow instructions. Long gone are the days when tofu and brown rice were the only plant-based options available. From hearty burgers to tiramisu and cheesecake, the Food Monster app makes it easy to find vegan versions of all your favorite meals and provides quick access to an expert community to guide you through the cooking process.
How can this app help in the fight against global warming?
The meat and dairy industries are some of the leading causes of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. The U.N. estimates that animal agriculture is responsible for around 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, while the Worldwatch Institute estimates it could be as high as 51 percent. By choosing to eat more plant-based foods, we can drastically cut our carbon footprint, save precious water supplies, help ensure that vital crop resources are fed to people rather than livestock and give thousands of species a fighting chance of survival. We hope the Food Monster app will propel an important shift in the way we eat and help transform our broken global food system into a more equitable and sustainable one.
How is it possible to make vegan food a little more tempting?
By featuring a whopping 5,000 vegan recipes, the Food Monster App makes clean and healthy vegan eating easy for everyone. The app features 500 plus search options and over 10 new recipes are added daily. This app really packs a punch. Whether people are interested in the health benefits of eating plant-based, or just enjoy seriously delicious food, the Food Monster app makes it easy for anyone to eat more vegan.
How did you get more than 5,000 recipes on the app?
The Food Monster app features recipes that are sourced from our thriving community of recipe bloggers from across the world and created in-house at One Green Planet.
What demographic are you aiming this app at?
The purpose of the app is to get more people to choose vegan food when they eat. Vegan cooking, which is dominated by shifting vegetables, grains, beans and legumes to the center of your plate, is an emerging trend across the world. This app is going to function as a guide for the millions looking to cook and eat this way.
In addition, while the Food Monster app is sure to delight its subscribers, it’s going to be a game-changer for cookbook publishers, chefs, brands, organizations and bloggers that work with One Green Planet, who will now be able to create special recipe collections for sale on the app.
