This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 14. The holiday in celebration of mothers and motherhood always occurs on the second Sunday of May, although the calendar date varies from year to year. And while it is widely celebrated, it isn’t considered an official federal holiday, so businesses will remain open —with the exception of banks and other institutions which are typically closed on Sundays.

If you live in the same city as your mom, taking her to brunch is nice and all, just know that popular spots in your city will be packed and you might want to avoid the hullabaloo. You could cook for her at home, and then plan a creative, outside of the box activity, like attending an improv comedy show or taking a class together. And hey, if the weather holds up and the day is actually spring-like, spend some time outside, at a park, the botanical gardens, or waterfront pier. Most importantly, find something that the two of you will enjoy together.

If your mom is far away, duh, definitely call her — early in the day, too, so she won’t be left waiting — and if you send a package or card, mail it early. It’s better that it show up the week before than days late. (Amazon makes that part easy.) Another thought: contact a local restaurant or shop that she likes and set up a credit or purchase for her there. When she finds out breakfast at her favorite coffeshop is paid for, or a new book she’s dying to read is all wrapped and ready to go at her nearby bookstore, the thoughtfulness and the element of surprise will not go unappreciated. (Bonus: supporting local small businesses).
