A 70-year-old man was robbed by a middle-aged New Jersey man early Saturday outside Delaware Park Casino, police said.

Delaware State Police said the elderly man, from Wilmington, Del., was leaving the casino around 2 a.m. when a middle-aged man approached him inside an underground pedestrian tunnel, which leads customers from the casino to a parking area, and then grabbed his shirt and spun him around.

The attacker allegedly implied that he had a gun and demanded the elderly man’s wallet. After he refused, the attacker forcibly removed it from his pants pocket and then ran away, state police said.

Troopers stationed at the casino saw the incident and responded in time to chase Jason Payne, of Mullica Hill, N.J., as he ran away from the scene.

After ignoring repeated demands to stop, Payne threw an object. The trooper then electric-shocked Payne and he fell to the ground.

State police later identified the object as the elderly man’s wallet. Nothing had been taken before it was thrown, police said.

Payne was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.
