For once, alleged mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger wasn’t the most famous guy in federal court on Friday.

Academy Award winning actor Robert Duvall showed up and took in day eight of Bulger’s trial.

Duvall walked in just before the start of the court day – at about 8:45 a.m. – and took a seat in the last row, which is reserved for the public. He sat on the right side of the courtroom, the same side that Bulger and his defense team sit.

He talked briefly with some people in the court, including federal prosecutors and then stayed for about 90 minutes before leaving.

According to Variety, Duvall is in the Bay State shooting a movie called “The Judge.” Apparently the 82-year-old actor was studying up for his latest role.

Duvall also famously played Tom Hagen in mafia movies “The Godfather” and “The Godfather Part II.”

While Duvall was in the courtroom, he heard testimony from state police and federal ballistics experts as they talked about the dozens of guns allegedly seized by Bulger’s gang associates. He also heard part of the testimony from Frank Capizzi, who was riding in a car in 1973 that was allegedly shot up by Bulger’s gang.
