The city yesterday unveiled plans for its largest affordable housing complex since the 1970s — the 5,000-apartment unit Hunter’s Point South project in Long Island City, Queens. At least 3,000 of the rental units at Hunter’s Point South will be maintained as affordable housing for low- and middle-income families.
Phase one of the complex is scheduled to open in 2014. At least 75 percent — a minimum of 685 of the total 908 units in phase one — will be reserved for families with an annual income between $32,000 and $130,000.
The city’s Housing Preservation and Development department will hold a lottery to decide who is selected to live in those first units, but the lottery likely won’t be held until about a year from now.
Ferries will begin running this spring from Hunter’s Point South, between Borden Avenue and 54th Avenue, to 34th Street as well as Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan.
