Boston police said on Wednesday that they caught a man stealing and opening packages left at homes in South Boston.

Officers were called East Sixth Street just after 2 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a larceny. They spoke with witnesses who described a man who was allegedly punching and tearing open packages and taking items inside.

When officers caught up to the man, they said they found a UPS shipping receipt on him as well as a Patriots knitted hat.

Daniel Doyle, 44, of South Boston, was charged with larceny, police said.
