An East Boston man who is accused of assaulting a police officer was arrested Thursday for a careless mistake that, according to Transit Police, wanted men and women often make on the MBTA.

Transit Police on patrol at Jackson Square station in Jamaica Plain said they spotted Jason Ciulla, 33, allegedly evade fare around 2:30 p.m. by “piggybacking” behind a paying customer. When officers approached Ciulla to issue a ticket, a background check revealed that he had three warrants out for his arrest.

Not only was Ciulla wanted for assault and battery on a police officer, according to police, he also had warrants out from two Boston courts for alleged shoplifting and a drug violation.

Police said they also issued a citation for Thursday’s fare evasion.
