A Queens man has been arrested forassaulting an openly gay journalist in Midtown earlier this month, but investigators found no reason to classify it as a bias-related attack, police said.

Leighton Jennings, 24, has been charged with assault in the second degree but not with a hate crime after his Jan. 17 assault on 46-year-oldRandy Gener.

Gener was walking on Seventh Avenue near West 54th Street at around 3 a.m. when he andJennings began arguing, police said. Jennings punched Gener in the face, causing the journalist to fall and strike his head on the ground. Jennings fled the scene.

Gener was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital with severe head trauma. Heis currently recovering from brain surgery.
