Police officers responding to an assault call at an apartment complex in Danvers shot a suspect late Thursday night.
The shooting took place in the Avalon Danvers complex on the site of the former Danvers state hospital around 10:30 p.m., according to the Boston Globe.
While the suspect was being taken into custody, he was shot by officers, said Police Chief Neil Ouellette.
"The ensuing investigation indicated that a robbery had occurred and as officers were attempting to place the suspect into custody for that, as well as existing trial court warrants an officer involved shooting occurred,’’ Ouelette said. “The suspect was shot.’
No officers were hurt in the shooting. The name of the suspect who was injured has not yet been released by police. However, police want to ensure residents that they should not fear for their safety.
“Residents in the area should be assured that there is no risk to their safety and the initial assault was not a random event,’’ Ouellette said in the signed statement.
