Assault suspect wounded in Rockaways police confrontation

Firearm Highpoint November 16, 2013

A Queens man is in critical condition after being shot by police he allegedly threatened in a bloody confrontation early Saturday morning.

Four officers responded to the call, arriving at the Beach 41st Street Houses in the Rockaways shortly before 1 a.m. Following the sound of screaming into the stairwell, they encountered the 25-year-old suspect. He turned to flee up the staircase and when ordered to drop his weapon he reportedly pointed it at the officers.

One of the cops fired about five rounds, striking the suspect in the torso twice. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Two cops who were involved in the incident were also hospitalized with minor injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
