New York’s second-richest resident, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, warned fellow billionaire — and possible presidential contender — Donald Trump to drop the “birther” issue with President Barack Obama.
“The president was born here,” the mayor said during an appearance yesterday on “Fox News Sunday.” He minced no words in suggesting that Trump is only hurting himself by continuing to demand to see Obama’s birth certificate.
“The Republicans are making a terrible mistake in making this a big issue,” Bloomberg said. “We have immigration, we have the deficit, we have the economy. Those are the things that the public cares about.”
Bloomberg also disagrees with Obama’s pledge to let Bush-era tax cuts for households earning more than $250,000 expire.
Now is not the time, said Bloomie. “I just think this economy nationwide is at a point where it really could go either way,” he said.
